CV Advice
It takes an employer just seven seconds to save or reject a job applicant’s CV. This means creating a succinct CV is absolutely vital if you want to land that all-important interview.
CV Presentation
A CV is the first thing an employer will see when hiring for a vacancy. So how it looks at first glance will be a major reason any potential employer will decide to read in more detail. A badly laid out or confusing CV probably won’t get a second look. So, keep it professional, clear, short and succinct.
Tailor your CV
Every job is different and so should your CV, if you want to stand out. Tailor your CV according to the job you are applying for. Make sure you highlight the specific skills, experience and any personal qualities that make you the right match for the job.
Don’t leave the reader guessing
The reason may be genuine, but if not explained in your CV, you may never get the change to. Always explain a career change or state reasons for any gaps in career history.
What should I include on my CV
Personal details: Clearly presented at the top of your CV, name, email, contact number and address
Personal statement: The first element of your CV and your first opportunity to stand out. In one short and concise paragraph state who you are and what you can offer.
Work Experience: In reverse chronological order to highlight your most recent experience first, state the job title, the organisations name, the date between which you were engaged. Finish with your key responsibilities whilst in the role.
Achievements: Applying these to the role you are after and using examples, show how your previous experience has given you the skills to make you a suitable candidate
Education: The further into your career, the less emphasis you need to place on this section. So only mention relevant elements, such as a degree.
Hobbies & Interests: Not always needed, but mentioning something that is potentially value adding is never a bad thing and also may give you something to talk about at any interview you attend.
Check, check, check
Check your CV thoroughly. Make sure your grammar and spelling are on point.
