Can’t find the right candidate for your business? Build your recruitment process into a recruitment weapon!

THIS WEEK, THE EMPLOYER (BUSINESS)

What is the aim for a business who is recruiting………….? To find, and hire, the best candidate. Simple, and so it should be. There are always obstacles when recruiting, but you can avoid many of these by ensuring that you have a recruitment process that is fit for purpose and most importantly……………adds value.

YOUR recruitment process is unique to you. It is a great way to sell your business to candidates, regardless of whether it is a candidate or client driven market. Recruitment is a two way street, you need to ensure that candidates are a great match for your company, and they feel the same way about you. This isn’t just so they choose to join your business, but also to ensure that they stay and grow with your business.

Key areas to have clear in your recruitment process:

1.       Ownership

Who owns your recruitment process? When looking to hire, it needs to be clear who is in responsible for the process (1 person). The last thing you need is 2-3 different stakeholders saying different things to the agencies/candidates and confusing the message. Do note, the person who is responsible doesn’t necessarily need to be the decision maker.

2.       Step-by-step guide

This is important for consistency when recruiting within the business. Everyone knows how the business wants to recruit and why they want to recruit this way.

3.       Clear Job Description – Including salary and benefits

Know what you are looking for and advertise your salary and benefits. If you don’t know what you’re looking for you’re not ready to recruit. You will waste time and money, and lose the interest of candidates/recruitment agencies in your role. Being clear from the start avoids wasting yours and others time and shows you are serious about recruiting.

4.       Communication

It is vital that you communicate throughout the recruitment process. If you have open communication links with the hiring team, candidates, recruitment agencies then you are building trust and ensuring that candidates are getting the best experience they can. Do not underestimate the power of good communication through the process as this ensures that your brand and EVP is a positive one.

5.       Interview Process

Have a clearly defined interview process that is going to help, not hinder, your recruitment campaign. You want it to be engaging, fit for purpose and lean. Time is a huge killer when being in a recruitment process and by making sure you have your interview process in place and agreed timelines between interview stages you can keep momentum going and the candidate’s interest in your business.

6.       Pre-boarding & On-boarding

You have made an offer, which has been accepted – Great news! It is now crucial that you keep your candidate engaged. Communicate with them regarding security checks, documents required and forms they need to read/sign. Send them a written guide for them to read, so they can ask questions along the way. Hiring managers – Arrange a time for them to come into the office and meet the team, or meet them for a coffee, to help embed them into the business before their 1st day. This reassures the candidate and reduces the risk of losing the candidate to another business during their notice period.

Other useful hints and tips:

·         Making sure hiring managers have the tools/support needed to recruit, including interview training, understanding the recruitment process and being able to articulate the culture of your business

·         Ensuring you’re aware of any recent legislation changes

·         Diversity & Inclusivity awareness

·         Understanding and using Talent Pools (if you have one)

The process is so important and in my 15 years in recruitment the companies that hire the best talent for them, in the shortest amount of time have a strong recruitment process in place. How do you find out if your recruitment process is fit for purpose you ask?
